Helping young women prepare for a successful future is at the heart of the work done by this 2017 Outstanding Alumni Award winner. Dr. Lovely Thornton ’93, PhD in Education, founded the Sensible Women Initiative Inc. (SWI) to help girls and young women ages 5 to 25 sharpen their decision-making skills and develop responsibility and integrity. With more than 600 participants, SWI has hosted seven national conferences. The nonprofit has expanded its membership since its founding in 2012, establishing chapters in Rochester, New York; Dover, Delaware; and Towson, Maryland. She and her team hope to establish a chapter in every state. “If we can influence a young woman’s mindset, we can change the mindset of the world,” she says.
